I like this album, but (a) you do need to be in the right mood, and (b) you have to listen to the whole thing in one sitting, otherwise it loses impact. - Astral Enigma wrote:
- Within Temptation - The unforgiving (rather good!)
Now I like this one - Something of a change in direction, which is quite frankly what they needed. They were starting to get stuck in a musical rut. - Astral Enigma wrote:
- Black Mountain - Wilderness heart (ok but needs another listen)
Underwhelming in the extreme - Classic rock watered down for the indie-addled who can't handle the real thing. - Astral Enigma wrote:
- Blood Ceremony - Living with the ancients (quite liked it)
Black Sabbath fronted by Angela Gordon? - Astral Enigma wrote:
- Caravan - In the land of grey and pink (herecy I know but I find a lot of it quite tedious - prefer others...)
Only Caravan album I've got - having enjoyed their CRF and HV sets, which others do you recommend? - Astral Enigma wrote:
- Mostly Autumn - Still Beautiful (ditto, although don't understand track resequencing?)
I'd love to know the logic behind this, and for the omission of "Fading Colours" and "Spirit" with Liam's solo.

Only Caravan album I've got - having enjoyed their CRF and HV sets, which others do you recommend? That's easy - (1) For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night - the first 2 or 3 they played at CRF were off this, and (2) Cunning Stunts.

| I like Waterloo Lily, Cunning stunts and If I could do it all over again, I'd do it all over you. But they are all available on budget re-issues at very good prices these days. | |

| Working through the post-CRF CDs
Credo - Rhetoric. Very very generic 80s neo-prog by numbers, but nicely done even though it's nothing groundbreaking Final Conflict - Simple. See above, but slightly better Ebony Tower - Dead Planets New Stars. Entertaining and rocky 4-track EP, though it's a different lineup to the one I saw at CRF, in particular a different lead singer. Swans in Flight - s/t. Really not what I expected, and sounds nothing like they sounded live. All the guitars are acoustic, so the end result is a lot softer than the electric band I saw live. Some of it still rocks, some is closer to folk than to rock. Mostly Autumn - Still Beautiful. This one has it's own thread Caravan - For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night.

| On the first few stages of my cross-USA train trip (about Goleta to Dodge City I think):
Sunfly - Live At The Target 8 Mar 1979 ~~ Thin Lizzy - Black Rose ~233~ Ian Dury - New Boots And Panties ~295~ Honeycrack - Prozaic ~305~ Katmandu - Katmandu ~391~ Larry Miller - Man On A Mission ~403~ Deke Leonard - Kamikaze ~418~ Kiss - Dressed To Kill ~423~ Thunder - The Thrill Of It All ~432~ Horslips - The Tain ~450~ Burlesque - Burlesque ~475~ Iron Butterfly - Metamorphosis ~499~ Santana - Santana ~503~ Sass Jordan - Rats ~513~ Extreme - Extreme ~538~ Status Quo - Whatever You Want ~552~ Therion - Deggial ~558~ Gary Moore - Dirty Fingers ~584~ Splodgenessabounds - Splodgenessabounds ~621~ Dan Reed Network - The Heat ~670~ Charlatans - Some Friendly ~707~ Gun - Swagger ~739~ Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger ~756~ U.F.O. - No Place To Run ~765~ Hawklords - 25 Years On ~924~
Then Prognosis 6-13 when the battery went flat on my first MP3 player! I have to say that, after listening to them starting at the first, I've been disappointed by how little has really interested me. Mostly all fairly mediocre - OK but nothing to remember - with a few exceptions.
Is anyone still reading these? Seems to have gone a bit quiet recently!

How is the District 97 album? It's one I added to my possible-to-buy list, then heard a sample and crossed it off again!

Hybrid Child - District 97 How is the District 97 album? It's one I added to my possible-to-buy list, then heard a sample and crossed it off again! It's an absolute blinder. District 97 are far and away my favourite American-based new discovery since I learnt of the existence of Spock's Beard back in '97, and Hybrid Child is as bold a statement of intent as you could wish for. It falls neatly in two halves: 4 mid-length proggy numbers, and 1 20+ minute 10-part(!) epic 'concept' piece concerning alien abductions. Nary a dull moment! The musicians are all very technically proficient, but amongst the crunching riffs and mental jazz-influenced freak-outs, they've got a fine ear for big melodies - not to mention an all-time great frontwoman in the making in the shape of Leslie Hunt. They're a bit like a noughties version of Curved Air mixed with Dream Theater. It's most definitely prog (if you don't like madly shifting time signatures, don't even bother), but with that in mind, it's one of the best debut albums I've ever heard, never mind recently heard. Two thumbs up from Hippy Towers!

To my mind, not really Colin. Nothing really bad on it. The first track is the one you'll know, nice and singalong etc, but the rest is listenable but no more. Looking at my assessment, most tracks fell into a 2 out of 5 rating, which means 'Quite happy to listen to again but wouldn't go out of my way'. Currently standing at number 799 out of a bit over 1500 albums...
