I've been listening to my Bachman Turner Overdrive, The Nice, Ayreon, Little Angels and Stiff Little Fingers CDs among others.

Jakszyk, Fripp and Collins "A Scarcity of Miracles". Laid-back late-night jazzy feel, although if you really don't like saxophones, this album probably isn't for you. Despite the presence of Robert Fripp, it's not much of a guitar album - Mel Collins' sax is the main lead instrument throughout.

BTO are vastly under-appreciated. Not Fragile and Four Wheel Drive are both superb albums, cheesy hit not withstanding. For me they were a highlight of High Voltage. Much as I like the Nice, I still find I'm dissapointed by the albums (if that makes sense?). Autumn 67 Spring 68 is the best and I never really understand if that's a compilation or not - it was released as an album I think but didn't have all new stuff on it. Must try Ayreon sometime.

btw - happy Christmas tol you and Helen from us!!

I have managed to fit in 2 Animals CDs, Nirvana, Colin Bass and Eric Norlander today, as well as grabbing an extra pressie for H and doing the wrapping. I also called into a local independent record shop run by Marti of the Toy Dolls.
And merry Christmas to you and Lynda from us too cherry

Kate Bush - 50 Words For Snow. People had been describing it as "A grower", but I'm liking it on first listen. Very mellow and chill-out.

So where would it appear in your all-time top 1000 original albums then Tim?

I still struggle with Tangerine Dream although there were a few tracks on one album that I liked - the one with 'Fly and collision of coma sola' on it. I still think Blackwater Park is the best (possibly) of the Opeth albums - but I've only listened to Heritage once so far...

Opeth fans seem to divide into two groups - those that preferred the death metal style, and those that prefer the melodic and atmospheric side we've seen on their more recent albums. Many of the former group can't stand Heritage.

Yes, that's what I'd noticed. However Blackwater Park is quite tuneful.

Blackwater Park was groundbreaking stuff, and a major step forward from what Opeth had done up to then. "Ghost Reveries" and "Watershed" took things further, with wider influences, and I find those albums even stronger.

Some people have criticised "Heritage" for sounding too 70s and retro, but I think it works. It's 70s in one way, and very modern-sounding in another.

Led Zeppelin - Presence
Black Sabbath s/t
Black Sabbath - Technical Ecstasy
Manowar - The Triumph of Steel

The two Sabbath albums have aged rather better than Zeppelin's, although I guess few would claim the patchy "Presence" was their final hour.

As for Manowar, I can't think of any other band whose music has veered between the utterly brilliant and the indescribably awful in quite the same way as Manowar. Not even Blackmore's Night. The ballad "Master of the Wind" is sublime, but "Achilles, Agony and Ecstasy in Eight Parts" contains what might possibly be the worst bass solo ever committed to record.

Opeth were one of the most boring bands that I have ever seen live.
And I am listening to
Beggars Opera - Act One
after Quintessence - In Blissful Company
& Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells

Machine Head - Unto the Locust.

One of 2011's great albums I hadn't heard until 2012. Candidate for the best out-and-out metal album of the year, possibly.

Last night watched (and listened to) the recent Renaissance US tour - the whole of Turn Of The Card and Scheherazade. OK, Annie's voice isn't quite what it was, but much as I love MA, BS et al, no-one comes close to Renaissance at their best! Happily watch over and over again - brings tears to my eyes!

Apologies for being a bit slow on here recently. Week before last I don't think I listened to anything at home, but a few albums in the car (Glass Hammer's 'If' and the latest Yes album a couple of times - they happened to be consecutive on mt CD autochanger and I didn't notice the change...!). But more this past week, particularly on the train. On a train, with good headphones, I tend to get a very different impression of what is good, perhaps because I'm concentrating more on the lyrics than whilst working? Anyway, last week or so:

Various - Classic Rock 149 - Powerage Vol 2
Various - Classic Rock 146 - Back In Black Redux
Various - Classic Rock 145 - Blues Breakers ~~
Various - Classic Rock 143 - With A Little Help From Their Friends
Various - Classic Rock 141 - Ones To Watch In 2010
Various - Classic Rock 140 - The Best Of 2009
Glass Hammer - If ~351~
Yes - Fly From Here ~380~
Michael Monroe - Sensory Overdrive ~499~
Magenta - Chameleon ~522~
Lindisfarne - Nicely Out Of Tune ~650~
Joan Jett And The Blackheart Band - Bad Reputation ~680~
Phil Collins - Face Value ~691~
Skyclad - Jonah's Ark ~702~
Grace - Poppy ~715~
Van Halen - Diver Down ~738~
White Willow - Terminal Twilight ~783~
Mastodon - The Hunter ~827~
Blackfoot - Tomcattin' ~842~
Lee Harvey Oswald Band - Blastronaut ~842~
Uriah Heep - Fallen Angel ~860~
Jon Anderson - Song Of Seven ~900~
Scorpions - Fly To The Rainbow ~905~
Ted Nugent - Scream Dream ~931~
Rush - Counterparts ~959~
Buckcherry - 15 ~959~
Lee Aaron - Call Of The Wild ~996~
Skid Row - Subhuman Race ~1038~
Meatloaf - Deadringer ~1175~
Wildhearts - Chutzpah ~1186~
Santana - Marathon ~1222~

In particular I noticed that the Grace album sounds somewhat like Jump, which I hadn't really noticed before. And I should probably give the White Willow album a few more listens - I think it will grow. A bit disappointed with Chameleon but again, a few more listens... the previous Magenta albums have taken quite a few listens!

Currently spinning

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden. Hippydave and others keep recommending this!
Deep Purple - s/t. Third (and best) album by the Mk1 lineup with Rod Evans and Nick Simper.
Kiss - Music from The Elder. Kiss go Prog. Well, almost.

I like all the first 3 DP albums!

So how is the Kiss album. I keep nearly getting it... should I? Or am I going to be sorely disappointed (I noted the CR-P rating for it last edition...)
